I took on a project that is WAY bigger than I anticipated, but it will totally be worth it in the end. I am re-doing my kitchen! Farewell purple...you've been good to us...:)....but farewell! Anyway, I thought I knew everything that I wanted, and now I am struggling. What I originally wanted was this....
.jpg)
Antiqued white kitchen cabinets. I love it! I think they are so rustic, and so my style. However, I am finding that this may not work in my kitchen because I am not doing new cabinets. I am just re-doing the current ones to save on our budget. And as my finisher explained to me, that may be more difficult to do because of the paint that is on there now, but if we have an extra few hundred dollars(which we don't) than we could do this.
So now I am bummed, and trying to decide which solid color for my kitchen would I like best? I have painted the walls the same color as my entryway and hallway which is a nice tan color. So what will I like better? Black cabinets which are sleek, totally Ashley style, not going to show so many little finger prints...

Or do I want beautiful and bright white cabinets that will probably brighten the room, help with the illusion of it being bigger...

Please cast your vote ASAP. I NEED HELP!!!!

Okay...I'm really not the best at decorating, and I'm not quite sure what you should do, but I have some opinions on both!
Black- I love it. I have learned with my black furniture that it requires A LOT of dusting and I don't like to dust. It will make it look smaller, but it's still gorgeous!
White- It will feel so bright and open. You don't have a ton of natural light in your kitchen so it might be the way to go. Yes-smudgy fingerprints all over :( and you'll have to figure out how to put color in the decorating(I hate decorating)! You're house is amazingly decorated and I know you'll make it look gorgeous no matter what you pick! I know I'm not much help, but I'm leaning towards the white *only because the size of the kitchen*. Good luck and post some pics!
Dang it--I can't decided. I'm glad it's not my decision. I tend to lean toward the white, but I hear your argument all the way!! But I'm a black girl too. Sorry-- best of luck on that one. Please show us before & after pictures though, k?
why cant't you do the cream cabinets? I don't understand. I painted my cupboards cream and they were magenta to start-you heard me right-some one painted them magenta. It they had detail on them-they don't-I would take the glaze and rub it on them-super easy. Hides all sorts of mistake and dings and such. If you really want to know about email me-mnielson2(at)yahoo(com)
If you want to you could totally do it yourself-it what I am saying. It is early, I am not making a whole lot of sense and I don't even have contatcts or glasses in.
I dont' think you could go wrong, but I'm liking the black. As I think of it, though, one thing I have liked about my last two houses has been the bright, well-lit kitchens. Good luck! You're a lot more ambitious than I am!
I have some friends that just did the white with a glaze over it to antique it. You should be able to do it, but it is VERY time consuming. Black seems to show more fingerprints than you would think... both would be great, but antique is still my favorite! - Sorry not much help.
I am voting for the white. It will make your kitchen look brighter and it is closer to what you really wanted to do them in the first place. But hey it is ultimately up to you. I think either one will look great. Good Luck!
Just to clarify, I can't do the glazed ones because the glaze is meant to show imperfections and flaws, but the cabinets I have now have brush strokes going against the wood grain, and these would show up in the glaze.
Fun.... FUN. This is great that you get to do this. Thank Heavens to the good bye purple cabinets. So as you know I love Black. But black SHOWS EVERYTHING. So if you are worried about fingure prints I think both are going to show some. Just think of a car. White cars can be just as dirty as a black car, but the black car will look dirtier. Same effect for wood. Have you decided what kind of flooring you are going to have? That will make a big difference. If it's a lighter color then dark cabinets will be fine. Along with your counter top. Also have you thought of a sky window.. those HELP so much to smaller kitchens. I know that just adds more $$, but it's something that can be done in time. Like you know I am a huge dark person, but I think in your kitchen where it is small I'd do the light with the tan walls, darker counter tops and whichever floors. This is so exciting though! Good luck honey! soory this is so long.
At first I was going to say black but then I read your comment that said you can't do the glaze,so maybe I am leaning towards the white now. I don't like black as much without the glaze. I have light colored cabinets right now and although they do look dirty a lot of the time, I find that I can see fingerprints more on my black oven and dishwasher.
Oh Ash, that's a hard one! I'm leaning towards the white because I think it would brighten your kitchen! I think the black would look nice too though. I'm excited to hear which one you choose and I can't wait to see the pictures when it's done!
Oh yeah, one more thing--consider which would look best with your appliances too.
I'm all about the dark cabinets. They look so rich & cozy. The also add a certain sort of elegance to the room but white is so light & fresh & crisp. Hmm... that's a tough one. I guess it depends on what your overall motif is. Good luck! I'm way too indecisive to make those kinds of decisions. But, I really think deep down that you know which one you want so just go for it!
I always prefer dark, but it's totally your call. It has to be what you would be most happy with.
I say the darker the better when you have kids but I do really love the light antique look. The sacrifices we have to make for our kids, its ridiculous.LOL
I love all of them! I just commend you for taking on such a project! When you are done, my kitchen will be waiting for you:)
You are going to love the new look, no matter which one you pick. We have talked, so you know what I think. I know you will choose the best for your kitchen because you just have "the touch!"
Ashley,
No, we don't know it's a boy. It just kinda feels more natural to call it a "he" when I talk about the baby.
The camera is my dad's, dang it! Wish it was mine. Mine is so old, and I am wanting a new one SO bad!
It looks like you've gotten lots of great advice! I know nothing about decorating, so will give none. I am very impressed with your enthusiasm and energy, though, and will be excited to see what you end up with! :)
You've gotten a lot of votes I see! If it were me doing my kitchen, I would go with the white. I LOVE the black as well though. Love it. But the thing about white is that you can always go to black later. And where it's summer, a bright kitchen would be so fun! That's my vote. :)
I hope I'm not too late to vote. I've been out of town. I would have to vote for the white cabinets. I think that would brighten your room and make it feel warm and welcoming. The truth is though, I know nothing about decorating so I don't know how heavily you want to consider my vote. Good luck with the project. I would love to come see your house sometime.
Okay honey you wanted the votes ASAP... now where are the results...
I'm just adding to those who said you'll see finger prints on the black as well as the white. I really don't think you can hide the grimy prints no matter how hard you try. That said, I agree with the commenter who suggested going opposite your floor color. In my kitchen we have a dark floor and dark countertops, so I went with light cupboards and light walls. I think the contrast helps it to not feel too small, plus it adds more variety.
Good luck, that's a big project. I hope you love the results.
I realize I'm late with this, but I haven't had much time lately to check blogs, so I won't add my suggestion since I think you've decided already. But I wanted to say that I wish my own kitchen looked like any of the pictures you showed -- how fun would ANY of those be to cook in??
